Review: Gengahr at Middlesbrough’s Westgarth (1/12/16).

GENGAHR made their first visit to Middlesbrough last Friday to put on a very intimate show for adoring fans.

Support came from Hartlepool bands PLAZA and Para Alta, who are both very popular in the local music scene.

PLAZA opened the set and they reiterated the fact that they are most likely the North East’s most exciting new band. Every track was performed to a high standard, opening with the older track “Origami” the quartet exploded into their half an hour set.

Playing newer released tracks like “Blood Orange” and “Youth” it was clear to see this band will be a big success in 2017.

PLAZA: Possibly the most exciting band in the North East right now.

Para Alta followed up swiftly, playing more laid back indie tracks that emulated the sound of bands like Beach Baby. The highlight, a newer track called “Backseat Driver” was very popular amongst the crowd.

Both support acts showed the talent that is rising from Hartlepool’s music scene at the moment.

10pm came around quick and Gengahr made their way on stage to the packed out Westgath 2. Greeting the audience and getting straight into their set.

They played a mix of old and new material, testing the waters ahead of their sophomore album, due for release next year.

Of course tracks like “Bathed In Light” and “Dizzy Ghosts” received huge reception from the audience. Lead singer Felix Busche asked the crowd to be patient with newer tracks and that’s exactly what the Westgarth did, listen and enjoy.

Finishing their set on the massively popular “She’s a Witch” the band thanked everyone for coming down and supporting them.

Whether or not Gengahr would return to Middlesbrough is based on how the audience reacted to them, hopefully enough was done to see them return sometime next year. Only time will tell.
